Professional Headshot Prep Guide

Congrats! If you’ve booked your headshot session, you’ve done the hardest part of your headshots – the commitment! The rest is easy because you have Aaron Gang Photography as your guide. Here’s some guidance that will lead to success for your session!

Treat Yourself Right
A good night’s sleep is one of the best things you can do! Do not drink or (God forbid) party the night before. If you smoke try to cut back as much as possible. Eat extra healthy 24 hours in advance of the shoot and eat light the day of the shoot.

Clothing

FOR WOMEN

  • Wear clothes that are comfortable and that make you look great.
  • Avoid picking something with bold, distracting patterns or colors – unless you can layer a plain blazer over it so that not so much of the pattern is showing and there’s a nice little pop of color.
  • Tight grids or small herringbone patterns can have a weird pattern effect on camera so please avoid grid-like patterns.
  • V-necks accentuate the neckline and generally tend to look best on women – Just be careful as to not choose something with too low of a neckline – Also, avoid turtlenecks.
  • Avoid short sleeves or tank tops – Executive headshots look best without bare arms, unless it fits with your brand personality, in which case, try going for a sleeveless blouse or shift dress.
  • Do bring a blazer so we can try that look with a blazer as an option.
  • For jewelry, go for something small and classic – not too reflective or flashy. Earrings shouldn’t dangle more than an inch or so from the earlobe – The simpler the better!
  • Bring 2-3 choices of tops and blazers – We can mix and match to create the perfect look for you.
  • For a no-jacket casual look, bring various colored blouses ideally darker than your skin tone.
  • Avoid overdressing – the best look is one that looks and feels effortless.
  • Clothes should be neatly pressed and should look new or like new.
  • Professional makeup is recommended. Makeup should be clean and natural.
  • Translucent powder. This will make the shine disappear, pores look smaller and the skin will look even. Avoid shimmers or any products with too much sparkle or shine. Avoid frosts or overly-bright colors.
  • Don’t get a new hair cut just before the shoot – let it grow in a bit to get that natural and comfortable look.
  • Avoid using a new product on your hair, face or body the day before the session, just in case you get a bad reaction.
  • Finally – Please arrive with your wardrobe for your first look and hair styled and makeup already applied at your scheduled time.

FOR MEN

  • Wear clothes that are comfortable and that make you look great.
  • Make sure your jacket and shirt fit you well. A poor fitting jacket or shirt will be obvious in the photos (especially around the neck).
  • Avoid overdressing – the best look is one that looks and feels effortless.
  • Clothes should be neatly pressed and should look new or like new.
  • Avoid busy patterns and large lines/stripes. This is very important.

Hair

Come with you hair how you want it. Bring your own styling products and combs/brushes. Especially if you don’t have a separate makeup artist.

Don’t get a new hair cut just before the shoot – let it grow in a bit to get that natural and comfortable look.

Makeup

If you’re having professional makeup through me, just come clean faced with no makeup. Women, if you don’t have a makeup artist, come with your makeup done in the lightest way you can (keep it as natural as possible), and bring mascara, a few lip shades, and translucent powder if you have. Men, if you don’t have a makeup artist, we will take care of you. We can do that for women, too, but it’s just prep and light foundation only, we don’t do eyes, lips, or other advanced stuff. Sorry.

Don’t Worry About Bringing

An Iron or a steamer – We’ve got that!

Music – I’ve got Apple Music so we can put on almost anything you want. If you do have a special playlist, though, bring it!
